Right away, I want to state that ALL children benefit from using manipulatives when learning. However, it is of prime importance for students with various special needs. Many students with special needs must have multiple avenues available in order to be able to store the information in their memory and then retrieve it from their long-term memory when applicable.
The use of manipulatives appeals to the kinesthetic part of learning. This is especially evident in the math curriculum. Students with special needs need the extra time to learn WHY they must do a particular math concept this way or that way. In addition, they really must have a strong grasp on number sense. This must start at the very beginning of their learning. Manipulatives can greatly benefit them with this.
Look forward to my next article which will discuss some easy manipulatives that you can find right at home or on the cheap .
